This Friendship Is Getting Hot And Bothered

| Friendly | May 8, 2017

(I have a friend staying over with her toddler daughter. The daughter walks up to our heater and is about to touch it. Her mother says nothing. The heater is an oil heater that doesn’t get hot enough to burn skin but it can still hurt a toddler’s tender skin.)

Me: “[Toddler], honey, don’t touch that; it’s hot.”

(Instantly the toddler starts screaming hysterically and runs to her mother.)

Me: *worried that she got burned, rushed over to check* “Is she all right?”

Friend: *looking daggers at me* “You said the worst thing you could ever say to her.”

Me: “What did I say?”

Friend: “You told her not to touch something! She screams when ever she gets told not to touch something. You had no right to tell her that.”

Me: “It’s hot; I didn’t want her to hurt herself.”

Friend: “Don’t tell my kid not to touch something; I’m her mother, not you.”

(Later on the child goes up to the heater, as I glance up she looks me in the eye and grabs hold of it. I am on the other side of the room; the mother has seated herself right in front of the heater. Of course, she starts screaming. The mother grabs her and glares at me.)

Friend: “WHY DID YOU LET HER TOUCH IT?! IT’S HOT! IT COULD HAVE REALLY HURT HER!”

(She now can’t understand why I no longer invite her to my house and have toned our friendship down.)
