This Conversation Will Fade To Black

I work at a popular chain retail store in the apparel department, but I am covering a lunch break in the electronics department when an elderly couple approaches me.

We are standing in front of the speakers.

Couple: “Hi, can you help us with security cameras?”

Me: “Of course! What do you need your security camera for? Inside or outside?”

Couple: “No, no. We don’t need a camera; we had a question about ours.”

Me: “Okay, what is the question?”

Couple: “Is there a clear spray that people can use to make it go black?”

Me: “I don’t think so. Was there any residue on your camera?”

Couple: “No, no. We just got home from vacation and the garage camera image was black.”

Me: “Do you have other cameras, and were they working?”

Couple: “Yes.”

Me: “The camera probably had a malfunction. Did you get a warranty on it?”

Couple: “No, no, it didn’t malfunction. Someone must have done something to it. We think someone got into the garage.”

Me: “Okay… It seems to me that if that’s the case, you should be talking to the police. Did you review the footage to see what happened before it went black?”

Couple: “No, we just saw it wasn’t working and came straight here.”

Me: *Internally facepalming* “I believe your best bet is to go home and review the footage to see if there’s any suspicious activity; if there is, you should ring the police.”

Couple: “Oh, okay. Thank you, sweetie.”
