They’re Repeating The Rhetoric, Song And (Di)Verse
Our team in the store is admittedly pretty diverse, enough so that it is noticeable. Sadly, with the current state of the political climate, this is being seen as a negative to a suddenly vocal subset of society:
Customer: “Is your manager around?”
Me: “Yes, she is.”
Customer: “She? Ugh. Let me guess. This is one of those DEI-happy companies?”
Me: “We do believe in diversity and inclusion, yes.”
Customer: *Rolling eyes.* “Figures. It’s not about hiring the best people anymore. It’s just ticking boxes.”
Coworker: *Who hears this as she is walking by.* “You’re right. We do check boxes when hiring, like ‘Can speak to customers without being wildly offensive.’ You, sir, would not pass.”
He took his business elsewhere, hopefully somewhere where his fragile sensitivities weren’t so easily offended.
