They’re Both Courting Controversy

(My husband and I used to work for the same company. This happens when we aren’t married yet, but we are dating. It isn’t a secret, and everyone is fine with it – or so we think. Our company, which is the head office for a grocery chain, encourages its employees to shop at that grocery chain by having them put their receipts in a container and doing a draw every Friday. There are two prizes each week, usually restaurant gift cards.)

Boss: “The winner of the first card is… [My Name].”

Me: “Oh, awesome!” *happily accepts prize*

Boss: “And the winner of the second card is… [Boyfriend].”

Boyfriend: “Great!” *happily accepts prize*

(Later.)

Coworker: “So – you’re going to give back your prize, right?”

Me: “Um, no. Why would I?”

Coworker: “Well, it’s not fair that you both won.”

Me: “Why not? We’re both employees of this company. How is that different from, say, [Other Coworker] winning?”

Coworker: “But you’re dating.”

Me: “The odds of us both winning would be the same if we were dating or not.”

Coworker: “It’s still not fair, and I think you’re being really selfish.”

Me: “Okay.”

(We used both gift cards that night to pay for a nice meal.)
