There And Bag Again

A customer is buying about sixty-ish items. As we charge ten cents a bag, I’m obliged to ask as I start scanning:

Me: “Would you like to purchase some bags?”

Customer: “Oh, it’s okay. I have some in my car.”

He just stands there, smiling blankly, not making a move, as I start scanning. He just stands there scrolling on his phone as I slide his items down to my bagging area. I tell him his total, he pays, and then he starts to heap the items into his arms, but obviously can’t get them all in one go.

Customer: “I’m gonna go to the car and come back for the rest.”

This is annoying, but whatever. I push his items aside and try to make sure they don’t get mixed up with my next customer’s items.

He comes back a few minutes later, but he doesn’t have any bags with him. Instead, he does as he did before, heaps as many of the items as he can into his arms, and carries them back outside. 

On his third round of doing this, still no bags, I have to ask:

Me: “Sir, didn’t you say you had bags in the car? Why not just bring them with you?”

Customer: “Yeah, I do, but they’re in the back seat, and I can’t be bothered to go back there and get them.”

He made five trips back and forth in total because he was too cheap to buy ten-cent bags and too ‘lazy’ to open his car’s back doors.
