Their Vegan Knowledge Is A Bit Sloppy, Part 3

I am the chef and owner of a restaurant. One of the servers comes into the kitchen with an ambiguous order. The server is extremely busy, so when we ask her to clarify the detail,s she asks me to go and talk to the customer. The dish in question can be made vegetarian, gluten-free, or vegan with some variations, so we need to know what the customer wants before we proceed. I go to the table and speak to the lady who ordered the dish with the rice noodles.

Me: “Are you vegan?”

Customer: “Yes.”

Me: “Okay, thank you. We just needed to know in the kitchen.”

I return to the kitchen, and when the server returns I let her know… but the server says that the same customer has also ordered the daily soup. This is a cream-based soup with cheddar cheese in it — clearly not vegan. I return to the table.

Me: “Excuse me, ma’am, but did you also order the creamy cheddar and vegetable soup?”

Customer: “Yes.”

Before I can reply, her companion butts in.

Customer’s Companion: “Oh, is it made with chicken stock? Is that why you’re asking?”

Again, before I can reply, the customer cuts in.

Customer: “No, it’s fine; I want the soup. It doesn’t matter.”

Soooo… chicken stock, cream, and cheddar cheese… but hey, I’m a vegan.

If you are a vegan or a vegetarian or have a dairy, gluten, or nut allergy, we will happily try to accommodate you, but PLEASE do not waste our time, energy, patience, and goodwill by saying you are something that you are clearly NOT!
