Their Product Range Is A Bit Wibbly-Wobbly Timey-Wimey

(I work in the kids’ clothing department in the store, which is considered different from the newborn, infant, and toddler section. That being said, I know a considerable amount about that section and am more than happy to help out customers when they ask me questions about it. This, however, absolutely takes the cake.)

Customer: “Excuse me. Do you sell any preemie sized items?”

Me: “I believe we do. Let me double-check on my device.”

(I search on it, and while most are online, we do have some in-store. She, meanwhile, gives me idle chit-chat:)

Customer: “My son was born a preemie.”

Me: “Oh! I hope he’s doing well now?”

Customer: “Yes, he grew to be quite big!”

Me: “Well, luckily, we have some preemie sized items. Right this way! How old is he now?”

Customer: “Nineteen.”

(I think to myself, “Okay, well, maybe she’s buying it for a friend.” This turns out not to be the case.)

Customer: *continuing on as she follows me* “Oh, I don’t actually need it. I just wanted to know if you have it. You didn’t have this back when he was born.”

Me: “Haha, yeah, I’m glad that they’re making it more widely available.”

Customer: “Why didn’t you guys sell this when he was born?”

(I’m dumbstruck by this and flounder for a minute.)

Me: “Uh, well, I was only six when your son was born, so I can’t say for sure why they decided to start stocking more preemie items. It’s a goo–“

Customer: “Hmph. You should know. You work here, don’t you? What are you going to do about it?”

Me: “A… about what?”

Customer: “Them not having preemie items for my son when he was born!”

(I am fully convinced by this point that this woman is crazy.)

Me: “I, um, I can’t decide when manufacturers decide to start making items, or where they sell them, um, and, I’ve only worked here for two years…”

(She stares expectantly at me.)

Me: “What… do you want me to do?”

(She harrumphed and stomped off, grumbling about how we “should have had preemie clothes” when her son was born. Did she expect me to be a time traveler?!)
