Their Awareness Is Puddle Deep

A customer accidentally drops a two-litre bottle of milk, which bursts open when it hits the floor. I quickly put my “closed” sign up, place a small trolley at the end of my lane to block it off so that no one will walk through the milk, and then finish serving that customer.

Just as I am about to leave to get a mop, another customer walks into my lane, pushes the trolley out of the way, and just walks through the milk. She starts placing her items right in front of the closed sign.

Me: “Madam, this lane is closed.”

Customer: “Ugh! This shop is always closing the registers!”

Me: “I just need to go clean up—”

Customer: “You’re pushing all into the self-checkout lanes and then you’ll be out of a job!”

Me: “Madam, I—”

Customer: “—And then you’ll be crying about all those times you could have been useful by actually serving customers and doing your job!”

Me: *Fast and terse.* “I need to go clean up the milk you’re standing in!”

The customer looks shocked at my tone, then looks down and realises she’s spreading milk everywhere.

Customer: “Well, you don’t need to shout!”

Me: “Madam, you’re literally crying over spilled milk.”
