The World Still Tick-Tocks While You TikTok, Part 2
Two young customers come up to me and hand me one of the display sneakers.
Customer: “How much are these sneakers?”
Me: “Those are $130 before tax, sir.”
Customer: “Pfft, forget all that. How much are they with a discount?”
Me: “What discount?”
Customer: “The “if you don’t give me a discount, I’m calling you racist” discount.”
As soon as he says this, his friend breaks out his phone and starts recording.
Customer: “Oh woooow! She just called me a [n-word]! S***, girl, you canceled!”
They are obviously filming this to get scare me into appearing on some kind of TikTok or online media portraying me to be racist. I roll my eye and call the manager over.
Manager: *Spotting the phone but talking to me.* “What’s going on?”
Me: “They said they want a discount or they’re going to accuse us of being racist.”
My manager turns to the young men.
Manager: “Sirs, we’re not racists unless ‘idiot’ is a race. Get out.”
The customers start shouting claims of racism and accuse us of kicking them out of the store even though no one physically attempts to do so. They both eventually leave after getting no attention or rise out of us. A visiting general manager comes by later in the day after hearing about the incident.
General Manager: “Aren’t you worried people are going to see their video and think we’re racist?”
Manager: “We’ll be fine.”
General Manager: “How can you be so sure?”
Manager: “They were both white.”
