The Wheels Came Off Before the Ride Began

I work for a designated driving service, doing phone intake and dispatch. A caller is booking a ride, and I ask:

Me: “Okay, can I get a credit card on file to book the ride?”

Customer: *Alarmed.* “What?!”

Me: “Your credit card details? We don’t charge it unless you cancel or no-show. You can pay cash on the day if you like.”

Customer: “But… but… that’s illegal!”

Me: “I assure you it’s not.”

Customer: “You can’t just ask for details like that!”

Cue a minute-long tirade, which I humored because it was funny to hear how more ridiculous they were getting!

Customer: “People should know about the scam you’re running! I should call the police! And my senator! And the news!”

Me: “Don’t forget the Secret Service!”

Customer: “F*** you!” *Click.*

I think I just saved one of our drivers from a very unpleasant experience.
