The Ups And Downs Of The ‘Real World’

| Learning | July 22, 2016

(I’m attending broadcast school. One of the projects is to find a non-profit organization in the city, and design an ad campaign for them. One of my friends reveals she’s the president of an NPO, so I decide to do hers. I make the pitch to my instructor, and everything goes swimmingly, until the end.)

Instructor: “Wait, did you say the president of this NPO is a friend of yours?”

Me: “Yes.”

Instructor: *sarcastic* “Well, then, something tells me you’ll do REALLY WELL on this project.”

(Flash forward to the end of the semester. My friend has to submit a confidential evaluation of my project to my instructor. I’m working in a studio late one night, finishing off another project for another class, when my instructor walks in.)

Instructor: “I thought you said the president of [NPO] was a friend of yours.”

Me: “She is.”

Instructor: “Did you two just have a fight or something?”

Me: “No. Why do you ask?”

Instructor: “Well, I’m just going over your evaluation right now, and I’ve never seen anyone graded this harshly.”

(My instructor walks back out, in a bit of a daze. I go back to work. About an hour later, my instructor comes back in again, this time all excited.)

Instructor: “DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS?”

Me: “Know about what?”

Instructor: “She says they’re going to use your stuff in the real world! They NEVER use a student’s stuff in the real world! Oh, you’re getting an ‘A’ for sure, now!”

(To this day, I still don’t know exactly what my friend said about me to put my instructor on such an emotional roller coaster.)
