This story reminded me of my own experience.
When I was in my early twenties, I caught strep throat for the first time. There was very little room to doubt that diagnosis; a coworker had been coming to work while sick with it, and she’d infected the whole office. My symptoms were an exact match to hers. Nevertheless, my doctor really wanted to do a strep culture to confirm it. She showed me the throat swab.
Me: “If you try to stick that down my throat, I’m going to throw up.”
Doctor: “Well, let’s just give it a try anyway?”
I was way too sick to try to argue with my doctor; speaking hurt terribly. So, I let her stick the swab down my throat, and my prediction came true. She managed to get a basin in place just in time. Still, I was very embarrassed and kept apologizing.
My doctor said only one thing on the matter.
Doctor: “Well, you did warn me.”
