The Learning Method Has Its Ups And Downs

| Learning | July 27, 2015

(We are going rollerblading as a special treat in PE class. The teacher is having us fill out a form ahead of time so the roller rink will be prepared. She has a tendency to be quite stubborn.)

Teacher: “These are men’s sizes, so girls, you’ll have to go down a size. They also don’t have half sizes, so if you’re a boy, just round up. But if you’re a girl, you’ll have to round up and then go down a size.”

Me: “So, I just round down.”

Teacher: “No, you round up and then go down a size.”

(I know this teacher very well and I try to patiently explain.)

Me: “But, let’s say I’m a 7 1/2. I would round up to an eight, and then go down to a seven. 7 1/2 becomes 7, so it’s rounding down, right?”

Teacher: “But there are certain steps. That’s the only way it will work. You aren’t being respectful. You have to follow my directions.”

(I decide it’s not worth it and pretend to agree.)

Me: “Oh, okay. I see now. Thanks for telling me.”

Teacher: “I’m glad you’re using your listening skills.”
