The Guest Is Salty

I’m just starting my night auditing shift at the hotel. As I’m counting the till, a gentleman comes up and says:

Guest: “Who does the salting around here?” *For snow and ice.*

Me: “We all do, sir; we salt every hour when it is snowing or cold enough for ice.”

Guest: “No, you don’t.”

Me: “Yes, we do, sir. I’ll check the cameras to make sure the last staff did.” *Checks cameras.* “Yes, she salted just thirty minutes ago.”

Guest: “Well, my wife just slipped at the side door.”

Me: “I’m sorry to hear that.”

Guest: “You’re sorry to hear that!?”

Me: “…Yes, I am. Sorry that happened, but we have salted and shoveled; unfortunately, it is snowing, so it still has a chance to be a bit slick out.”

Not like I’m gonna take any pleasure in anyone getting hurt.

Guest: “Well, this isn’t okay.”

Five minutes later, the guest corners me in the housekeeping closet as I’m getting breakfast stuff to defrost for the morning.

Guest: “You’re gonna hear from my lawyer.”

Me: “Okay, sir, we are glad to provide the camera footage of what we have done to prevent these accidents when the case comes up. Can I help with anything else?”

Guest: “Bring me three pillows and leave me alone. I expect the snow to all be taken care of next time I check outside.”

Me: “I’ll bring those right up and continue shoveling and salting every hour. Have a good night.”

He storms off from here.

Like d***, what more can I do? I don’t control the weather. I’m not gonna stand outside and drop salt every time we get a centimetre of snow; I feel like every hour is already more than most businesses in the area do. Gotta love the folk who think they can strong-arm something because of their own carelessness.
