The Grinch Goes Corporate

, , , , , | Working | November 24, 2022

My supervisor gave me permission to decorate my cubicle for the holidays as long as I keep it respectful — not overboard, not distracting, etc. — and it comes down after the holiday is done. For Thanksgiving, I put some small handmade decorations on the desktop as well as some hand turkeys made by my son and daughter on the inside of the cubicle wall.

[Coworker] is walking by when he sees my decorations and stops.

Coworker: “Where did you get this?”

He picks up one of my handmade decorations.

Me: “I made it.”

Coworker: “Why?”

Me: “Because I wanted to decorate and—”

Coworker: “This looks r*****ed.”

He laughs and throws my decoration in the trash.

Me: “How about we don’t touch things that don’t belong to us, [Coworker]?”

I pick my decoration out of the trash and put it back on the desk.

Me: “And don’t use that word.”

Coworker: “It’s ugly. Did some r*****ed child make it?”

Me: *Turning away* “Have a nice day, [Coworker].”

When I return from lunch, all my decorations are smashed, the hand turkeys have been ripped to pieces, and everything is in the trash. I go right to my supervisor.

Me: “Someone trashed all my Thanksgiving decorations.”

Supervisor: “Who?”

I recall my conversation with my coworker earlier.

Supervisor: “I see. I’ll look into this.”

I never heard anything else from [Supervisor] but I did see [Coworker] walk by several times that day with a self-satisfied smile on his face. I didn’t decorate again for fear that they would be trashed again.
