The Gift Box That Keeps On Giving
I used to work at a high-end department store. We would often get customers who tried to return stuff in our store brand gift boxes, regardless of where the merchandise was actually from. Most customers were nice about it and didn’t even realize that the gift was just packaged in our gift box despite being purchased elsewhere.
Customer: “I got this as a gift and it’s f****** ugly. I want a refund.”
Me: “Did you get a gift receipt?”
Customer: “No but it’s in your packaging so you need to take it back.”
Me: “This item isn’t sold by us. It’s a [Competitor] product.”
Customer: “No, it’s in your gift box. It’s your s*** and you need to take it back.”
Me: “It’s just been placed in one of our gift boxes, but the item itself is from [Competitor].”
Customer: “That’s not how it works!”
Me: “If I found a Whopper in a McDonald’s bag that doesn’t mean it’s from McDonald’s.”
Customer: “…that’s stupid!” *Grabs the item and leaves.*
