The Couponator 52: The District Doppelgänger
A customer is trying to use an expired coupon.
Me: “Ma’am, that coupon expired last month.”
Customer: “But it was sent by you guys!”
Me: “Yes, ma’am, but they are monthly coupons. This one was for September, and we’re already in October.”
Customer: “Then I demand to see a manager! They’ll be able to sort this out!”
As luck would have it, our district manager was walking past. I knew he was visiting both of our store locations in the region today and was on his way out, but I hoped he would be able to spare five minutes. I call him over and explain.
District Manager: “My associate is correct, ma’am. The coupons are sent by our national office, and we can’t override them in any capacity. When they’re gone, they’re gone. It’s actually part of the promotional slogan.”
Customer: “But your sister location does this for me all the time!”
District Manager: “I don’t think so, ma’am, as it’s impossible to override. Even for a district manager.”
Customer: “Well, they do! I knew I should have gone there! They’re so much better than this place in every way!”
District Manager: “You’re certainly welcome to try, ma’am, but we cannot help you here.”
Customer: “What’s your name?”
District Manager: “It’s [Name], ma’am.”
Customer: “I’m going to go to your sister location this afternoon, and I will be complaining to them about you, aaaaand I’ll be getting this coupon approved!”
District Manager: “I’m sorry to hear that, ma’am. I hope you have better luck at our sister location.”
Customer: “Hmph!” *Leaves.*
Me: “Did I overhear that the customer will be going to our sister location?”
District Manager: “You did.”
Me: “The same location you were about to leave for, before I caught you?”
District Manager: “The very same.”
Me: “So, she is going to go to the sister location to complain about you… to you.”
District Manager: “So… if I take the express freeway, I should be able to beat her there and enjoy seeing the expression on her face…”
He did do that very thing. Apparently, the customer did indeed show up that afternoon. The look on her face was when she realized who was about to serve her was everything [District Manager] had hoped it would be…
