The Ceiling Fan Was Innocent
I work in a motel.
Guest: “There’s a sound in my room. It’s really bugging me!”
I follow her to her room. As we’re outside, I say:
Me: “I’m surprised you can hear it with the helicopter nearby.”
Guest: “Helicopter?”
Me: *Pointing.* “Over there. The police helicopter. They’ve been hovering around for about twenty minutes now.”
We get into her room, and she just stands there.
Me: “Can you help me identify the sound?”
Guest: “Can’t you hear it?!”
Me: “All I can hear is the helicopter outside.”
Guest: “…”
Me: “Wait, is that the sound you’re complaining about? You said it was coming from your room.”
Guest: “I said it was in my room!”
Me: “It’ll be in every room, ma’am. When the helicopter has done what it needs to do, it’ll move along.”
FYI, the helicopter isn’t that close. The sound is really low, albeit constant.
Guest: “Well, go tell it to shut up! I’m trying to sleep!”
