The 17th Amendment

(I’m an administrative assistant. The following conversation takes place over email.)

Coworker: “Can you book me a hotel for 16th and 17th of this month?”

Me: *goes to website and gets finance to authorize* “Certainly. Please see attached booking.”

Coworker: “Thanks very much.”

(At this point I immediately know something is going on, as this guy doesn’t EVER email back thanks. Sure enough, two minutes later…)

Coworker: “I’m having trouble reading the attachment on my phone. Is this definitely for two nights?”

Me: “It’s for one night. You asked for 16th and 17th; did you want until the 18th?”

Coworker: “By that, I meant the evenings of the 17th and 18th.”

(I have to read that a couple of times to appreciate how much sense he ISN’T making. He obviously means 16th and 17th nights, which is in no way obvious in his first email. I go back to the hotel and extend the booking, and email it to him again.)

Me: “Not a problem! Here is the amendment.”

(Sure enough, this time he didn’t reply to say thanks. I guess it was right that time.)
