Thank Goodness For The Protection Of Moms

I am ten years old and this is the late 1980s. My grandma often goes to yard sales to buy used clothing for my siblings and me. One day, she brings home a bright yellow shirt with a bulldozer on it with the phrase, “Try A Trojan Today.” Trojan was a construction vehicle manufacturer that has since gone out of business.

Grandma: “Go try this shirt on; it’ll look nice on you.”

I don’t like the color.

Me: “No, thanks. I don’t really want it.”

Grandma: “I just bought it for you; you go try it on right now!”

Me: “I don’t want to!”

My mother whispers something in my grandma’s ear. Her eyes go wide and then she rips the shirt out of my hands and throws it into the trash.

It wasn’t until I was much older that I understood why.

I kind of wish I still had that shirt now, though.
