Taking Your Advice To Cart
I spot a half-full cart apparently abandoned in the middle of an aisle. I check on it a few times as I complete other tasks. After thirty minutes I determine that it’s been abandoned and start to put the items back.
About ten minutes later a customer rushes up to the customer service desk and I am called over to add an explanation.
Customer: *Angry.* “Why did you move my cart?! I was just in the restroom!”
Me: “I thought it was abandoned and it had cold stuff in it.”
Customer: “I was in the restroom!”
Me: “Yes, sir, you said. Maybe next time bring the cart with you and leave it outside the restroom instead of leaving it in a random aisle.”
Months later he still seems really upset by this, as he recognizes me and says while pointing to his cart:
Customer: “Nobody’s gonna put my stuff back if I run to the restroom this time, will they?”
Me: “Depends, are you gonna be s***ting for thirty minutes again?”
I could only get away with saying that as I was off the clock that day and was shopping as a regular customer. There was nowhere his complaint could go!
