‘This Is Good’ Is Bad

(I am substituting in a tenth grade English class. The students are writing essays. Student #1 and Student #2 have been joking with each other a lot.)
Student #1: “How long does each paragraph have to be?”
Student #2: “Five sentences.”
Me: “Yeah, five sentences, but it really depends on what kind of sentences. Like… “This is bad” is not a good sentence.”
Student #1: “Right.”
Student #2: “Is ‘This is good’ a good sentence?”
