Grandma Knits Communities Together

, , , , , | Related | March 4, 2021

When I was in college, my grandpa was diagnosed with cancer. My grandma has always knitted as a hobby, and after Grandpa’s diagnosis, she started knitting constantly to help relieve stress. After a year of near-constant knitting, she had mountains of scarves, hats, socks, mittens, small blankets, and other items piled around the house.

My mom and her siblings convinced Grandma to start selling items to help raise funds for Grandpa’s treatments. It was decided that everyone would take a pile of stuff and sell to coworkers, friends, and neighbors, and then pass the money back to Grandma. I took a pile of stuff to college and posted pictures and prices on social media, along with the story about my grandpa.

A few of my close friends shared the post, and within a week, I had people from all over campus messaging me looking to buy gifts for themselves or their significant others. I sold out of everything within a month and still had people messaging to ask when I would get more stuff from my grandma.

Everyone was super friendly and sympathetic about my grandpa, so even though it was a stressful time trying to balance family needs, the messages from buyers, and my school work, it was a huge morale boost that helped me get through the year.

My grandpa survived his treatments and is still with us today. My grandma has continued to knit, though at a slower pace than she used to, and two or three times a year, we all still get a pile of stuff to sell wherever we are.

Kilometers From Correctness

My husband and I go to a chicken fast food place famous for its Louisiana-style chicken. We go through the drive-thru and order a [Chicken Meal #1] with a side of [Side #1]. We are the only customers in the drive-thru and there is nobody inside.

Worker: “That’ll be [price]. Here’s your order, sir.”

Husband: “Thanks, ma’am.”

My husband pulls away as I start going through the order. I open the chicken container and see that it is [Chicken Meal #2].

Me: “Honey, this is [Chicken Meal #2], not [Chicken Meal #1].”

Husband: “No problem. I’ll just park here and bring it back in.”

He goes back inside the restaurant and lets a worker know. She apologizes and hands my husband a container with [Chicken Meal #1]. He comes out and gets back in the car with the correct chicken.

Husband: “Well, that was interesting. I tried to give her back the wrong chicken and she told me to keep it.”

Me: “It’s about to get more interesting. They gave us [Side #2] instead of [Side #1].”

Husband: “Are you kidding me? I’ll go back in again.”

He goes in a second time to get the correct side.

Husband: “She gave me [Side #1] and told me to keep [Side #2].”

While en route home, I realized that there was no [Bread Side], which should automatically come with the meal we ordered. Back we went. The workers were very apologetic. My husband and I found it overly amusing that an order could be messed up so badly. In the end, we ended up getting a whole bunch of chicken and a side for free.

Maybe If You Ignore It Long Enough, It’ll Untoast

I work in a sandwich shop. I’m helping train a new hire, but he’s basically done and can be mostly left alone to deal with customers. An elderly couple comes in. I probably should have dealt with them myself because they’re known for being particular to the point of frustration, but I’m busy preparing for the next day. My coworker takes their order and I’m nearby if he needs help. They get all the way to him wrapping the sandwich when I hear:

Old Lady: “That’s all, but we didn’t want it toasted.”

I turn around when I hear this because that’s one of the earliest steps. They just watched my coworker put the sandwich in the oven, take it out, put the toppings and sauce on, and are just now mentioning they don’t want it toasted. The poor coworker just turns to me with a helpless expression and I sigh, going for the bread to make a new sandwich.

Me: “Did you not notice it was toasted?”

They just glared at me as I remade the sandwich. I 100% wasn’t allowed to say that, but what the h***?

A Truly Impressive Baby Face

While waiting in line at the store, I overhear this conversation.

Cashier: “Everyone’s always thinking I’m fifteen! It’s so awful! How old do you think I am?”

Customer: *Awkwardly* “Nineteen?”

Cashier: “Yes! I’m so happy you got it right!”

Customer: “Sure.”

The transaction finishes. I step up.

Cashier: “Hey, sweetie! Are you waiting on your mom?”

Me: “I’m thirty.”

The transaction finishes in awkward but blissful silence.

Someone’s Got A Lot Of Hangups

I get a call from a customer saying she can’t use her debit card. We offer overdraft privilege, a set amount of money that someone can overdraft and we still pay it, and while she is overdrawn by a few dollars, she indeed does have enough overdraft privilege to cover her purchase. After looking further, I see it’s only partial, meaning we don’t authorize debit card transactions, only automatic bill pays and checks.

Me: “After looking further into your account, I see that you only have partial privileges and can not use a debit card while overdrafted.”

Customer: “I’m supposed to have full privilege.”

Me: “Not a problem. I’d be happy to update it to full so you—”

The customer cuts me off, screaming, and I don’t get a single word of it besides “f***” a few times and rapid honking of a car horn.

Me: “Ma’am, in order to complete your request, I will have to ask you to stop using profanity.”

Customer: “YOU, F****** [RACIAL SLUR]!”

Me: “Oooookay, hanging up now.” *Click*

I checked the notes on her account and saw at least twenty calls from that SAME DAY that all said some variation of, “Employee hung up due to customer using racial slurs.” Wow.
