Mommy’s Little Emo

| Related | August 12, 2014

(At summer school I’ve got a reputation as the ’emo kid’ and a bit of a rebel. Today my mom, who’s very sweet and a bit naive, came in with me to sign a paper, but since it’s only my second day, we’ve gotten lost. We turn a corner and run into one of my new friends, who’s a bit of a punk.)

Mom: *surprised* “Oh, hello.”

Me: “Dude, where’s our classroom? This place is so weird.”

Friend: *points* “That way. I’m heading there now. Wanna come?”

Mom: “No, I think it’s the other way, sweetie.”

Me: “Well, I’ll see you later, Mom.”

Mom: “Bye! Have fun in school!”

(Once we get out of earshot…)

Friend: “What was THAT?”

Me: “Not. A. Word.”

Take You For A Wild Ride

| Learning | August 11, 2014

(I am explaining subject-verb agreement in English using sentences I make up as examples. I write down ‘My sisters like horses.’)

Me: “What does this say?”

Student: “My sisters like w*****?”

(I start and turn around to discover I forgot to write the middle “s” in horses.)

Me: “Whoops! My mistake!”

(I quickly add in the middle ‘s’ and thankfully the students don’t ask what ‘hores’ means.)

Stupidity Come In Many Languages

| Learning | July 19, 2014

(I’m in Mandarin class doing some work with two of my classmates. Despite being Danish, it is not uncommon for us to speak English, which we are currently doing.)

Classmate #1: *in Danish* “Why do you guys do that? Speak English?”

Me: *in English* “It’s easier, I guess? We don’t really think about it.”

Teacher: *in Danish* “[Classmate #2], [Classmate #3], [My Name], you are in Chinese class! You should be speaking Danish, not English!”

(The entire class giggled while the teacher just walked away, completely oblivious.)

Attention Doesn’t Span Very Far

| Learning | July 8, 2014

(We have a guest lecturer for this class.)

Guest Lecturer: “I’ve been reliably told that the average adult attention span is now 10 minutes, so if I bore you feel free to go to sleep.”

Student Behind Me: “That’s my cue.”

All Things To Some People

| Friendly | July 3, 2014

(I’m at my school’s science fair, looking around at other people’s projects. Since it’s an online school I don’t know most of the people there. I notice a girl dressed differently and approach her.)

Me: “Hey, your clothes look familiar…”

Girl: “Uh, they might. Do you watch [Anime]?”

Me: “Yeah, wait! Are you cosplaying [Character]?!”

Girl: “YEAH! Do you like them?!”

(I show her a phone charm from the anime. She gets excited.)

Girl: “I HAVE TO SHOW YOU TO MY MOM! She said nobody like me would be here! I FOUND MY PEOPLE!”

(We hung out most of the day.)
