At a toy store. We have an electronic section for video games, systems, headphones, and musical instruments for beginners. So we have a protection plan to cover those items in case if anything happens. As a Sales Associate I had to tell customers if their products qualify for it, and if they would like it, for an additional price. It was near the end of the night, we close at 9, it was about 7:30ish. We usually have one or two customers in this late. So I was the only cashier up at the time, the other one was on break and mine was going to happen when she came back to cover for me.

Customer #1: *walks up places items down*
Me: Hi, how are ya today? *rings a plushie through*
Customer #1: Fine thanks, how are you? *4 other sets of people come up to line up*
Customer #2 (behind #1): Only one cashier? They need to hire more people.
Me: *rings in an electronic toy car* Doing well thanks. And just so you know this car here qualifies for our warranty here. It’ll cover any damages-
Customer #1: NO *he cut me off*
Me: Okay, *little shaken up little tears coming out, but rings other items through*. And would you like to-
Customer #1: I SAID NO.
Me: *goes to customer service to grab a tissue bc i started crying. My other cashier co worker came out then and went on. One of my managers grabbed me and brought me to one of their offices*
Manager: You okay? [other manager name] is on cash for you. Go take your break. Take an extra 5 minutes. And calm down.

Punched Out And Ready For A Punch Up

(I am working as a cashier supervisor at a large store. I’ve just clocked out since my coworker has taken over to do the closing shift. A cashier stops me as I’m about to leave the store, not in any uniform and clearly dressed in my winter outdoor clothing.)

Cashier: “Hey [My Name], [Coworker] is busy. Can you override this markdown on your way out?”

Me: “No problem.”

Customer: “I’d suggest you get here a little faster next time.”

Me: “I’d suggest you don’t take that tone with me. I barely get paid enough to give a f*** about you when I am on the clock. I certainly don’t care when I’m punched out.”

(The cashier high-fived me and I smirked and walked out the door.)

Blame Canada! (Day)

(Our night person recently quit, and we had to hire someone to replace him on short notice. He’s not a bad worker, but he was only given two shifts of training before being put on nights alone. As such, he doesn’t know the items on the register, has tried to sell baking materials to customers [the stuff we need to make our baked goods and is NEVER for sale], and has been painfully slow. It is Canada Day weekend, the biggest weekend of the year for business.)

Me: “Hey, [Supervisor], I just checked the schedule, and the only person working after 11 pm is the night person.”

Supervisor: “Are you kidding me? They only scheduled ONE PERSON for Canada Day!?”

Me: “Looks that way.”

Supervisor: “I’m going to go into the back and cry.”

(When stuff like this happens it usually means the supervisors are obligated to stay for hours after their shift to help without any warning. My supervisor calls up my boss.)

Supervisor: “Hey, I just checked the schedule and only the night person is scheduled tonight. You didn’t re-allocate an afternoon person to help him?”

Boss: “Nope! He should be fine!”

Supervisor: “Every day these past few weekends we’ve been lined up out the door from morning until two am. This night person has no idea what he’s doing, and he’s been stressing out because he’s having to deal with a full line up of customers, drive-thru, and making sandwiches all by himself, as well as doing all of his nightly cleaning duties and prep-work. We’ve been forced to stay for hours after our shifts have ended to help him, because otherwise he’d get nothing done. And tonight, the busiest night of the year, he’ll be dealing with a full line up of customers all night. He won’t get anything done…”

Boss: “Oh… well, it’s not your job to stay there!”

Supervisor: “You told us that it is.”

Boss: “Well, it’s not! Go home when your shift ends! And nobody else can stay to help him either!”

(My supervisor decided to do what my boss says, because otherwise he’d be stuck there until two am. My supervisor and I clocked out and stood outside as the store filled with customers, drive-thru was packed to the brim, and droves of customers were leaving angry because the one person working the entire store wasn’t going fast enough. The next weekend my boss asked the supervisors to stay late to help out again… and the night shift person quit two weeks later.)
