Bureaucracy’s Hidden Benefits

, , , , , | Right | September 10, 2008

Me: “Hi, how can I help you?”

Client: “I’d like to know why I haven’t received my benefits.”

Me: “Let’s just pull up your case. Can I have your case number?”

(The client gives me their case number and I pull up the case.)

Me: “Well, it looks like you didn’t return your application. Without an application, we can’t approve welfare benefits.”

Client: “Can’t we do it over the phone?”

Me: “No, you need to come in and do an in-person interview so we can get an ID and a signature.”

Client: “So, we can’t do it over the phone?”

Me: “No, we need a face-to-face interview.”

Client: “That’s just too much work. I’ll just go get a job!” *click*

(Customers have been calling in asking for their Economic Stimulus Tax Rebate since the third week in April, even though it wasn’t scheduled to start showing up until the first weekend in May.)

Me: “Thank you for calling, how may I help you?”

Customer: “Yeah, I was wondering if my $600 rebate was in my account yet? My neighbor got his.”

Me: “I’m sorry, it looks like it has not been deposited yet.”

Customer: “Why not? My neighbor got his already.”

Me: “I do apologize, but the IRS has not sent the deposit to your account yet.”

Customer: “Well, why not?”

Me: “I don’t know, sir, but you can call the IRS at 1-866-*** ****, or visit their website. They can tell you when yours is scheduled to be deposited.”

Customer: “Why can’t you just put the money in my account?”

Me: “Because we don’t have it, sir.”

Customer: “Well, after it comes in, I’m changing banks!”

Me: *shakes head*

(A local officer picks this woman up off the street for public intoxication. He brings her to the jail to be booked in.)

Me: “Ma’am, please move over to the counter.”

Woman: “I don’t want to order anything, I’m not hungry.”

Me: “Ma’am, I need to remove the handcuffs and search you.”

Woman: “I don’t own any handcuffs.”

Me: “Ma’am, do you know where you are?”

Woman: “Yeah, at the store but I don’t like what you have done with it.”

Me: “How much have you had to drink tonight?”

Woman: “OH, I don’t drink. I’m a dietitian!”

Me: *furrows eyebrows* “Do you mean diabetic?”

Woman: “Whatever. I doesn’t… er … didn’t drink anything but some orange juice… The bottle is in my purse.”

(I opened her purse and found not only the bottle with OJ in it but an empty bottle of vodka. The OJ in the bottle was almost see through, she had so much Vodka in it.)

Me: “Good Afternoon, [Mississippi Government Department]. How may I help you?”

Caller: “Yes, I would like y’all to get me some food stamps. My kids are hungry and I got fired last week.”

Me: “Ma’am, we don’t issue food stamps. You need to contact the Department of Human Services.”

Caller: “What?! My cousin told me to call y’all and y’all would get us fed. I know the State has lots of monies, can’t you just send us some?”

Me: “I’m sorry ma’am, you need to call DHS and they will be able to assist you.”

Caller: “F*** You! The God-D***ed State never does a d*** thing for us poor folks! I hope you feel the fires of Hell for starving children!” *click*

Me: *stunned silence*
