Masked By Corporate Reasoning

, , , , , | Right | June 11, 2021

I live in an area where masks are a touchy topic. The majority of people don’t like them, and we don’t have a mask mandate, but I deliver groceries and most of my customers are elderly, so I wear mine. This is apparently a problematic decision.

Customer #1: “Why are you wearing your mask? Do you think I’m diseased or something?”

For my next delivery, I leave my mask on my chin and decide I’ll pull it up if needed.

Customer #2: *In an ‘Are you stupid?’ tone* “What’s the point in the mask if you’re leaving it down?”

Fair point. I put it on for my next delivery.

Customer #3: “Are you really wearing a mask just so you can hand me my stuff?”

Me: *Pauses* “Well, we don’t have uniforms, so this is the only thing I have with the logo on it. I’m just wearing it so people know I’m with [Delivery Service] and not a stranger on your porch.”

Customer #3: “Oh, you’re right! Thank you!”

I have finally found something that pleases everyone!

When Country Roads Aren’t Relaxing

, , , , , | Right | June 11, 2021

I work for a high street catalogue chain delivering goods that people have bought online.

It is the end of a long shift, and I am about forty-five minutes away from base in a speed-restricted van.

I set the last customer’s postcode into my GPS to locate the home and end up down a dusty farm track. I call the customer on the only number they have given me — a landline — asking for a call back when they don’t answer. I use my phone as a second GPS, which takes me to the main road; this takes me about ten miles out of my way. When I get off the main road, I call the customer again. Still no answer.

I head back down the side roads to the village they live in, in the hope I can find the road. I am in luck; I find the street, but the house has a name, not a number, so rather than find a number, I have to look at each home for a building name. No joy, so I call the customer, who does not answer.

I start door-knocking. This is about 9:30 on an evening so I understand why people are annoyed at being disturbed by me. When I find the property, the owner opens the door with a smile and his first words are:

Owner: “I saw you were trying to call our house, but we don’t have a house phone; we use mobiles. Why didn’t you call them?”

It’s Okay; He Was A Red Shirt

My area is under a weather advisory. I worked late and couldn’t get to the grocery store, and after clearing the driveway, neither my wife nor I want to cook. We figure the roads are good enough to order delivery and tip generously. Then, I get a call from the delivery company.

Employee: “I’m calling from [Company] to let you know that your driver has experienced an emergency and cannot fulfill the delivery. Would you like a refund or for someone else to be sent out?”

Me: “If the first driver had an emergency, how can I ask someone else to try? I’ll take a refund.”

Employee: “Don’t worry; there was no issue with your address. The driver just had an accident.”

I felt so terrible for the driver, but who says something like that as if it makes it okay? I wasn’t sure if he was just doing his script, so I didn’t want to chew him out. I just repeated that I wanted the refund because I couldn’t ask another person to try.

Tipped To Be A Bad Sign

I work as a delivery driver, and I really strive to give good service when I’m on delivery. However, not everyone appreciates that.

I arrive with the food in a bag and find a note taped to the door.

Note: “Ring doorbell, leave food.”

There’s nowhere to leave the food except on the doormat, which I don’t really feel comfortable doing given how dirty it is. I ring the doorbell a couple of times and wait so I can hand off the food directly. However, when the man opens the door, he just grabs the food out of my hands, and pulls the sign off the door, which is when I see that there is a dollar bill taped to the back.

I’m guessing that was supposed to be my tip, but the man just slammed the door without even a thank-you.

Good Customers Can Always Gas You Up

I deliver food to this gentleman once or twice a week at his corporate job and he has always been great with the tip. Today, he handed me $40 on top of his usual 25% tip. I broke down crying.

His generosity made it so that I can afford the gas to go see my family for Christmas. I texted him after the fact — something I usually never do — and he was so nice.

Gentleman: “Thank you for keeping me fed in 2020, and I’ll see you in 2021!”

Just keeping that positive attitude has made my entire month. I will finally get to see my family after one year and get a little gift for my love of ten years. This will not be forgotten! Thank you, corporate dude!
