Must Be A Gryffindor

, | Hopeless | November 17, 2016

(I’m in my 30s. At a certain theme park you can buy wands that interact with the park. I did notice that at the older part of the park it was harder to get the sensors to work. I made one thing work and a little girl, maybe eight, came up next to me and looked very upset that her movements weren’t making the thing go off.)

Girl: “My wand won’t work. I’m not magic.”

Me: “What?! Yes, you are I can tell! One second. You have to wait for it. Here, stand right here. Make sure you are doing exactly what is on the medal under your feet.” *watching for the red lights in the sensors to come back on* “Okay, now!”

(She tried a few times and it didn’t work. My mom went up to her to try and help her with her wand work. She was getting frustrated and drawing a crowd that was cheering her on. Finally it registered the movements and everyone clapped.)

Me: “See! I knew you could do it!”

My Mom: “You’ll be getting an owl with a letter any day now!”

(Her dad comes up behind me and quietly speaks to us.)

Her Dad: “You guys are awesome! Thank you!”

(The girl ran up to her dad asking if he saw what she did with the biggest smile on her face. There is a little witch in all of us.)

She Likes Turtles!

, , , | Hopeless | November 15, 2016

I’d just moved into a set of apartments for the first time, and I don’t know any of my neighbors. I come home from a long and tiring day of work one evening and venture out on the commons to throw something in a trash can there.

Quite abruptly, a small child comes rocketing across the grass and flings her arms around my legs, beaming up at me.

I didn’t know this kid from Adam, but she chattered sweetly to me about her plastic turtle until I went back inside.

A few days ago I went out on the commons again and found the same toddler there with her family. She charged up to me and declared, “Hey! I didn’t give you a hug this morning!”

I still don’t know any other neighbors, but that toddler’s friendliness made my day.

The Smoothie Will Never Be As Sweet As The Kid

(I am working alone during the night shift. It’s very slow when a little boy around the age of five comes up to me.)

Boy: “Hello, do you know if the protein you have is bad for me?”

(We have supplements you can add into your drink.)

Me: “No, it’s not bad for you, but do your parents want you to take supplements?”

Boy: “One second, please. I want to ask my mom and dad.” *runs off and comes back quickly* “Can I just make my own smoothie?”

Me: “Sure! What fruits do you want?”

Boy: “What do you have?”

(I list all the choices and he makes a decision.)

Me: “Great! What size cup do you want?”

Boy: *looks at the small and medium sizes* “Is the medium too much for me? Because I want more than a small but I don’t know if I can finish it.”

Me: “You can choose what you want, buddy. Do you want a medium?”

Boy: “I think I can drink it all. Can I take these cup sizes and show my mom and dad?”

(I agreed and he ran off again. He came back and ordered a medium drink. I quickly made it for him and he went off running to his parents, smiling and clearly happy with his order. That was the cutest kid I have ever helped!)

A Drive To Be Kind

, , | Hopeless | November 2, 2016

(I’m working as a cashier in a big supermarket, and this evening I am sitting at a desk at our Garden Department. A woman, who seems to be in a hurry, comes up to my till.)

Me: “Good evening.”

Customer: “Hi. I just needed a small plant, and it HAS to be a rose.”

Me: “Oh, that’s a nice rose you found yourself. ”

Customer: “Yeah, I think so. My son told me that we needed to buy a small thing, and that it HAD to be a rose. You see, my son has special needs, so when he goes to school in the morning he is picked up by a taxi. But because he has special needs he really likes when it’s the same person picking him up, so he can get comfortable with the person. Unfortunately, the woman he drove with some time ago was given new routes, so she couldn’t pick him up. But today she called us to say that she is getting her old routes back, which means that she will come tomorrow and pick up my son again. And he is so happy that he would like to give her a rose, because it’s her favourite flower.”

Me: “Wow, what a nice kid. And I’m happy that he will have the same driver again.”

Customer: “Me, too, especially because our mornings get a bit easier now.”

Me: “I’m glad to hear that. Here you go; have a nice evening.”

Customer: “Thank you, and you, too.”

Little Master Bruce

, | Hopeless | November 1, 2016

(I am a crossing guard. A little boy comes by with his brothers every day. He apparently is too shy to talk to me, but I take note of his Batman themed hat/backpack, etc. and call him Batman.)

Me: “Hey, Batman! Have a nice day.”

Little Boy: *whispers to big brother*

Big Brother: “He wants to be called Bruce Wayne.”

Me: “Have a nice day, Bruce Wayne!”

Little Boy: *smiles*
