Summer Is Coming…

(I work in a gas station. It is two minutes to closing time when [Customer #1], whom I recognize as always taking a long time, comes in. Keep in mind, I don’t get paid for working past closing time.)

Customer #1: “Yeah, just these.”

Me: “Your total is [total]. Thank you. Have a nice night.”

(It is now exactly time to lock the doors. [Customer #1] steps aside and starts organizing his wallet, putting his change away, etc. Two more customers come in as he finally leaves. [Customer #2] comes to the counter, and [Customer #3] goes to the soda cooler.)

Customer #2: “I’ll take a pack of [cigarettes].”

Me: “Okay, your total is [total]. Here you go. Have a nice night.”

([Customer #2] leaves, and [Customer #4] comes in. At this point I’m starting to wonder if I’m actually having a stress dream. We’re not allowed to close the registers when the doors are unlocked, and obviously I can’t lock the customers in the store.)

Me: *to [Customer #4]* “Ma’am, I’m sorry but we’re actually closed now—”

Customer #4: “I just need the ATM!”

Me: “Okay, but we are closed now.”

(I go find [Customer #3] at the soda cooler and inform her that we are closed. She leaves. [Customer #4] is at the ATM, when a child comes in and makes a beeline for our candy.)

Child: *to [Customer #4]* “Can I get this?”

Customer #4: “Yeah, sure. Go back to the car and I’ll buy it when I’m done.” *approaches me at the counter* “Just this.”

Me: *thinking: What part of “closed” and “You can just use the ATM” did you not get?!* “Yes, okay. Your total is [total], and here is your change.”

Customer #4: “Well, thank you. Sorry to inconvenience you tonight.” *leaves in a huff*

(I finally lock the door and close the register. My coworker, who has been in the back cleaning, comes up to see what’s taking so long.)

Me: “I hate summer. I hate summer so much.”
