Sugar Rush To Judgment
I run chocolate masterclasses over the summer break, as part of our restaurant’s way to reach out to the community and get some customers in during the quieter hours of the weekdays.
Most of the customers are mothers with their young children.
Mother: “My son can’t have white chocolate. They’re fine with milk chocolate.”
Me: “Can I confirm what ingredient specifically they have an issue with?”
Mother: “Just white chocolate.”
Me: “It’s just that the milk chocolate contains all the ingredients that are in white chocolate, so if they have issues with white chocolate, then they’ll have issues with milk chocolate too.”
Mother: “No, they’re fine with milk chocolate.”
Me: “Can I ask how you know your son has issues with white chocolate?”
Mother: “He ate some once, and then he was sick afterward.”
Me: “Was it just a little bit, or—”
Mother: “—Oh, no, he ate like two pounds of it before we caught him. He threw it all up later. That’s how I know.”
Riiiight. I know the mother was being an idiot, but sadly I had to reject them from the class as I couldn’t accept the liability.
