Stories To Send You Over The Moon
(I have an eight-year-old daughter and think it is a good time to start teaching her about her culture. We’re Scottish, so I start by teaching her some Scottish children’s songs.)
Me: *singing and using my best Scottish accent* “There was a man who lived on the moon, lived on the moon, lived on the moon. There was a man who lived on the moon and his name was Aiken Drum….”
Daughter: “There’s something I don’t get.”
Me: “What?”
Daughter: “Why is it such a big deal that this guy has a job?”
Me: “It’s not. Why would you think that?”
Daughter: “Because everyone calls him Income John.”
Me: *trying not to laugh* “You misheard me; it’s Aiken Drum.”
Daughter: “Okay, that makes more sense.”
Me: “The song is about a man who has a face made out of food, lives on the moon, and somehow manages to use a soup ladle as a musical instrument, but the only part you found confusing was his name?!”
Daughter: “Oh, I never thought about that.”
