Standing On One’s Own Feet
(My daughter is two years old. She went to bed early and fell asleep immediately. However, half an hour later, she comes running downstairs, sobbing.)
Daughter: “Mommy! Mommy!”
Me: “What’s wrong, honey? Did you have a nightmare?”
Daughter: “No, mommy, a man came into my room and took off my feet and put on some new feet and I don’t like these feet! I WANT MY OLD FEET BACK!”
Me: “…”
(I regain my composure.)
Me: “Honey, it was just a dream. It’s okay; those are still your old feet.”
Daughter: *sniff* “Are you sure, mommy?”
Me: “Yes, [Daughter], I’m sure. It was just a dream.”
Daughter: “Okay…”
