Sounds Like A Supervillain Origin Story, Part 3
My dad’s side of the family always treated my sister and me like s*** — they’re Catholic, and we were IVF babies, not raised in Catholicism — so in adulthood, they pretty much shun us.
Earlier this year, we found out that my cousin was pregnant, and we were not informed or invited to either the emergency wedding (God forbid that child be born out of wedlock) or the baby shower.
My mother still insisted, though, on getting something for my cousin. I was texting my sister on the day the baby was born. (Again, we were not told; she only found out on social media.)
Sister: “Yeah, I told Mom she shouldn’t have to get her anything, considering they want nothing to do with us. I mean, h***, [Cousin], [Aunt], and [Uncle] all refused to come meet my kids when I finally came back home.”
Me: “Exactly. They’re not getting anything from me because of the disrespect they have shown our whole lives. And you know what sucks? I am the queen of presents, so they are just depriving their child of cool gifts by refusing to acknowledge my presence. Now they just get the petty queen.”
I pause and think for a moment.
Me: “Holy h***, is this what Maleficent felt like?”
Sister: “I mean, honestly… But you know what? They’re missing out, and it just means my kids get spoiled more by you, so I’m fine with that. Just don’t curse the baby.”
