Sorry Not Sorry
(I have just walked into my store to begin my shift when a woman comes over from a department I am familiar with but not scheduled in, waving her arms and yelling.)
Customer: “Hey! Do you work here?”
Me: “Yes, I do.”
Customer: “Do you see me over here waiting?”
Me: “Let me get clocked in and I’ll be right with you. I’m sorry about your wait.
Customer: “No, you’re not.”
Me: “Uh. Okay, then.”
(I did help her, despite my incredible urge to just go do my own job. She berated me the entire time, saying I should have known she was there and calling me racist for not jumping to help her. When I pointed out that we were both white women, she told me I was sexist, too. I didn’t apologize for anything else during the conversation because, if we’re being honest, I wasn’t sorry.)
