Sooo Not Ready For The Internet, Part 17
Back when the internet was still quite novel for older people, we would regularly help some of our patrons with accessing the internet and showing them how to navigate it. I taught one of my regulars how to look up movie schedules and read reviews for said movies (he loved going to matinees with his wife).
Customer: *To me as I am passing.* “I’m very confused.”
Me: “About what?”
Customer: *Pointing to the computer screen.* “This review says this is the funniest film they have ever seen.”
Me: “Okay?”
Customer: “But this review immediately below it says it’s the biggest and unfunniest pile of garbage they’ve ever seen!”
Me: “So I can see.”
Customer: “Well… which is it?”
Me: “Have you seen the film?”
Customer: “No! I don’t know if I should! Why are they saying very different things!”
Me: “These are just opinions. People have differing opinions, especially when it comes to humor; it’s subjective. If you found films similar to this as funny in the past then you should find this one funny, too. If not, then maybe it’s not for you.”
Customer: “I don’t understand, either it’s funny or it’s not!”
Me: “Well everyone has an opinion, especially on the internet.”
Customer: “Well they shouldn’t! They should all have one opinion so it’s easier for me to pick a film!”
