Sooo Not Ready For The Internet, Part 13
I run a small business with a Facebook page. When you click on our message option, a series of pre-written potential messages come up — things like, “I’m interested. Can you tell me more?” and, “I have a question about a product.” I woke one morning to several messages from one customer.
At 3:30 am:
Customer: “I’m interested. Can you tell me more?”
At 3:50 am:
Customer: “Tell you more about what?”
Customer: “Why are you messaging me?”
Customer: “What are you talking about?”
At 4:45 am:
Customer: “I do not appreciate this harassment. I will be reporting you to the police.”
Customer: “Stop contacting me!”
Customer: “I am not saying anything to you. You are harassing me. The police will be in contact with you today.”
If you’re familiar with messaging, all of her messages showed up on one side of the screen, while mine would have shown up on the other side as replies.
I checked the woman’s profile and saw that she was probably in her late fifties or early sixties, so I assume she accidentally messaged and didn’t realize she was talking to herself. I could have left it alone, but I wanted to clear the air as professionally as possible.
Me: “Hi there. It seems you clicked on the option to message us around 3:30 this morning. We have not reached out to you before this message, as you can see from all the prior messages coming from your account. If you are not interested in anything from our store, that is completely fine. We hope you have a wonderful day!”
Customer: “You are a terrible person. You messaged me all morning and kept me up. I have had no sleep because of you.”
I decided to leave it alone, as she was clearly set on being right regardless of what had actually happened. The police never reached out, so I don’t know if someone corrected her or they just never followed up with her complaint.
