Something To Announce

| Learning | September 7, 2015

(I’m taking the broadcasting program at the local tech college in order to fulfill my dream of becoming a radio announcer. Despite this, announcing turns out to be my poorest class, and I’m struggling in it. At the end of my first semester, I’m taking my announcing final, which is a one-on-one oral exam with the instructor. This conversation takes place before the exam starts.)

Instructor: “So, are you nervous?”

Me: “Yup.”

Instructor: “You’ve got no reason to be nervous! Why are you so nervous?”

Me: “Well, it’s because I’ve always wanted to be a radio announcer, but I’m not doing so well in your class. How I do here today will directly affect whether I stay here at [Tech College], continue down my career path, and whether or not I’ll ever get my dream job of being on the radio.”

Instructor: “Oh. Well, when you put it like that, yeah, you should be nervous.”

(Luckily, I passed, and thanks to much hard work over the next few semesters and in the real world, I’ll be celebrating 9 years of being a radio announcer this spring.)
