Someone Sick Is Involved, Anyway

Coworker: “Hey, [My Name]. I’m collecting money for [Charity], and I was wondering if you’d be willing to donate anything?”

Me: “Tell me a bit more about [Charity].”

Coworker: “Oh, they help sick kids.”

Me: “What kind of sick kids? How do they help?”

Coworker: “Uh… shall I send you their website?”

Me: “Sure!”

Coworker: “So, can I assume you’ll be donating to—”

Me: “Send me their website, plus the specifics of what you’re donating, and I’ll have a read.”

Coworker: “Look, [My Name], it’s just a few quid going to a good cause and—”

Me: “—and that’s wonderful! Just send me the details, thanks.”

My coworker sighed but moved on. I spoke to my manager about it and asked if she knew anything about this coworker going around asking for donations. She didn’t but said she would ask around.

It turned out that while the charity was legit, my coworker was not affiliated with them in any way and was just taking money from busy coworkers who usually wouldn’t have time to check up on where their fiver went.

I don’t know what happened to her after that, but I never saw her in the office again.
