Sock Block

(I knit and crochet as a hobby. On rare occasion, I’ve made things for people by request. I’ll ask for the cost of supplies, and occasionally some money for my time, depending on how well I know the person. This person is a good friend, who I only would have charged for supplies.)

Friend: “My office is so cold that I have a hard time typing. Would you be able to make me some fingerless gloves?”

Me: “That depends. A lot of people say, ‘fingerless gloves,’ when they mean, ‘fingerless mittens.’”

Friend: “What’s the difference?”

Me: “Do you want it to have individual fingers like a glove that just cut off before the end of your fingers? Individual fingers are really tedious to do, and to be honest, I won’t do that. I really don’t like doing it. But if you want it like mittens, they have a hole for your thumb, then a hole for the rest of your fingers together, and it would cut off here.” *I motion between my knuckle and the first joint in my index finger* “I can do that.”

Friend: *scoffs* “What? I could do that with a sock.”

Me: “Okay, great. Get a sock.”

(Soon after that, he tells me a friend of his wife’s is making him fingerless gloves. A week or two after that, he proudly displays a nice handmade pair of cabled, fingerless MITTENS.)

Friend: *smugly* “Look at these really nice gloves that [Wife]’s friend made me.”

Me: “Oh, those mittens? You told me you could do that with a sock.”
