Shutter Your Mouth And Figure It Out

, , , , , | Working | January 29, 2025

Boss: “Ugh, the electric shutters broke again.”

Me: “What happened?”

Boss: “They got out of their tracks. What time does your shift finish?”

Me: “In about five minutes.”

Five minutes later, I have clocked out, and the boss has a ladder out under the electric shutter.

Boss: “Hey, since you’re here, can you go up that ladder and just… jam the shutters back onto their tracks?”

Me: “I don’t know how to do that.”

Boss: “Just go up there and jam them real hard.”

Me: “Can’t you do it?”

Boss: “I have a back injury! You’re young; you’ll be fine!”

Me: “I’m not really comfortable with that.”

Boss: “I’m the boss, and I’m telling you—”

Me: “I’m off the clock, so you’re telling me nothing. Also, it isn’t going unnoticed that you’re asking me to do this after I’ve clocked out, meaning if I get hurt the store won’t comp, isn’t that right?”

[Boss] says nothing, just stares at me.

Me: “Do it yourself or call a professional, but I’m picking my kid up from school. Good luck.”

I heard he fixed it himself but also nearly fell in the process. I quit two weeks later.
