Shouldn’t Ignore The Signs
(I can barely hear as a child. After surgery I can hear, but I still have issues. I can speak fine, but I try to read lips. I am still pretty fluid in ASL even though I don’t use it much.)
Teacher: *speaking*
Me: *can’t hear, but trying to read her lips*
Teacher: “So what do you think?” *pointing at me*
Me: “Can you repeat that?”
Teacher: “No, you need to learn how to listen.”
Me: “Mrs. [Teacher], I have a hearing issue and couldn’t hear.”
Teacher: “That’s because you listen to music all the way up. Your generation will be deaf by 20.”
Me: “Not to be rude, but I really have a hearing issue. When I was little I had to learn ASL.”
Teacher: “Stop lying. You just can’t pay attention.”
Me: “You can call home and ask my mom.”
Teacher: “Go to the office. I don’t tolerate lying in my class.”
Me: *walked to the door* “Just one more thing.” *I sign* “You are a horrible teacher. I will be reporting you.”
