Shocked When They Find Out What’s In Store…
A long time ago, I witnessed a conversation between my manager and an oblivious elderly customer. The mall store where I worked was closing down for good in about a week or so, so we weren’t getting new stock shipped in for things that were out.
This one customer simply could not conceive that this was a thing.
Customer: “But I need [item]?! Why can’t you order it for me?!”
Manager: “Ma’am, as I have explained three times now, we are not going to be open anymore in about a week. When an item is gone, it’s gone. That’s why everything is 75% off.”
Customer: “Exactly! If it’s 75% off, then a lot more people are going to want them! You should have accounted for that and ordered more! This is disgraceful!”
Manager: “Well, if that’s how you feel, ma’am, then that’s how you feel. There’s nothing I can do to help you.”
Customer: “Hmph! I’m never going to shop here again!”
Manager: “That’s… the… point!”
After the store closed, as I walked through the mall, I would often see angry elderly customers gathering outside the store, angered as to why it wasn’t open. The closing-down signs (with the date of the final day) were still up, but they were still oblivious.
