She’s Locked On That Word
(My dad is packing the car for an overnight trip and I’m helping him carry stuff out. My mom is deaf in one ear.)
Me: “Mommy, can you watch the door?”
Mom: “What?”
Me: “Watch the door so no one comes in.”
Mom: “What?”
Me: “Watch the door.”
Mom: “Lock the door?”
Me: “Ye-Wait, what?! Watch the door.”
Mom: “Lock the door? Okay.” *starts walking over*
Me: “Watch the door.”
Mom: “Lock the door, I know!”
Me: “Mommy, listen to me very carefully.”
Mom: “What?”
Me: *grabs mom and mouths very clearly* “WATCH. THE. DOOR.”
Mom: *realizing* “Oh, okay. Watch the door.”
Me: “You were going to lock me outside?!”
