She Led You Down The Garden Path

(It is Mother’s Day. I notice one of my stepsisters has given my mom a gift of a ‘garden in a basket,’ which consists of various types of green plants in a hanging basket. I assume it came with instructions.)

Me: “What kinds of plants are in the collection?”

Mom: “Well, there’s this kind *pointing at one leaf*, and there’s the kind with the skinny leaves, and the kind with the stripy leaves…”

(She finally notices me staring at her, and finishes off with:)

Mom: “…and these ones over on this side with the pointy ones.”

Me: “Why didn’t you just SAY you don’t know?”

Mom: “I didn’t want to sound dumb.”
