She Had Mow De-fence Against The Facts

, , , , , | Friendly | May 2, 2025

My wife and I moved into our house six months ago. It’s a real fixer-upper. We’ve been so busy renovating the interior and fixing the roof that we haven’t done much with the outside area and front lawn.

The house on the other side of the lawn (the neighborhood has a weird shape) sells to another couple. They immediately take a dislike to us when they come over to introduce themselves.

Neighbors: “Hi. We just moved in across the lawn.”

Us: “Hi, nice to meet you. We only moved in about six months ago ourselves.”

Neighbors: *Looking around disapprovingly* “You’ve been here for six months, and you haven’t mowed your lawn?”

Us: “Oh, haha, yeah, we haven’t gotten around to it yet. The house itself needed a lot of work.”

Neighbors: “Well, your lawn is the introduction to your house. You need to make a better impression!”

We brush it off and decide to do some minimal pruning to the meadow out front to look like we’re doing something, but in reality, our main focus is still making the walls insulated and the roof waterproof before winter on a tight budget.

Less than a week later, the neighbors are driving some wooden stakes into the lawn.

Us: “What are those for?”

Neighbors: “We’re going to build a fence soon so we can divide the lawn, and we’ll mow ours and make it look… presentable.”

Us: “It seems like you’re claiming about 80% of the lawn for yourself.”

Neighbors: “Yes, because this much of the lawn belongs to us.”

Us: “Actually, it’s closer to a fifty-fifty split. We have the land records to—”

Neighbors: “No. We own up to this line here. That’s what we were promised.”

Us: “Promised by who? Look, we have the land records, and we can show—”

Neighbors: “Why don’t you go back to whatever you’re doing to the inside of that poor house? Probably ripping up original features to make way for jacuzzis and TikTok dance floors or something hideous, I bet! You leave the grown-ups alone.”

Wow, they definitely seem to have a chip on their shoulder. Maybe it’s because we’re a much younger couple, and our house is much bigger than theirs. (It’s bigger but still a mess; that’s why it was cheap!)

Back inside, my wife is about to go into the storage area and dig out the paperwork for the house when we bought it.

Me: “What are you doing?”

Wife: “I’m about to show that b**** of a neighbor who owns what on that lawn.”

Me: “What’s the rush?”

Wife: “What do you mean? She’s about to put up a fence.”

Me: “And then mow all the lawn behind it.”

Wife: “Exactly, she’s… Oh.”

Me: “Exactly.”

Wife: “She’s about to mow more than half of our lawn for us.”

Me: “Ex… actly!”

So, we focused on our house while our neighbor spent a lot of money on a pretty-looking fence and got an expensive mower to take care of the lawn on that side of it.

She wasn’t happy a month later when, enforced by paperwork, a government letter, and an actual police officer, we claimed our rightful half of the lawn, and she had to rip up the fence.

We still thanked her for mowing over half of our lawn for us. We’re not monsters!
