Customer: “I need to get a CD for my daughter as a gift for doing so well in school! She’s top of her class!”
Me: “Congratulations to her, ma’am! What CD are you looking for?”
Customer: *Looking at a note.* “She wrote it down here, Mary Bilge.”
Me: “Do you mean Mary J. Blige?”
Customer: “Oh, I think it had a J in it maybe? Yes, Mary J. Bilge.”
Me: “I’m really sure you mean Mary J. Blige.”
Customer: “I know what my daughter wrote down and she’s very smart! She knows how to spell! She’s top of her class! It’s Mary Bilge!”
Me: “Do you know what song in particular she likes?”
Customer: “Oh, I don’t know it. But it goes like…” *hums a familiar Mary J. Blige tune*
I produce the album for her and tell her:
Me: “That song you just hummed is this one on the track listing. It’s definitely Mary J. Blige.”
Customer: “Well… maybe that’s her stage name? My daughter can’t be wrong! She’s top—”
Me: “—of her class, yes, ma’am. This is the album she would like, trust me.”
She hesitantly purchased the album, and based on there never being a request to return it, I can only assume I saved that daughter from the short-lived music career of ‘Mary Bilge.’
