Sell That Sign As A Shirt And Spin It Into A Positive Outcome!
The world is in lockdown, and only essential businesses, like grocery stores, are open. I work for one such huge national chain. I have also just tested positive for the disease that has shut down the world and have called to inform my supervisor.
Supervisor: “Nope, not happening. We need you to come in.”
Me: “I have tested positive this morning. Do you not understand that?”
Supervisor: “You’ve got no PTO left, and all your sick days are used up.”
Me: “I’m sorry I used up the measly two weeks of vacation time you give us for the birth of my child.”
Supervisor: “If you’re healthy enough to call in, you’re healthy enough to come in. I’ll see you in an hour. If you don’t come in today, you’re fired.”
Me: “That doesn’t make any sens—”
Supervisor: *Click*
Fine, he wants me to come in? I’m coming in. I don my mask, but I also make a sign and tape it to my uniform front and back.
Sign: “Please stay six feet away. I am sick and infectious, but my management has forced me to come in anyway. If you get sick in the next few days and suspect that it came from [Store], please contact their legal team at [phone number].”
My supervisor saw the sign and furiously told me to remove it. I said I would do no such thing as I didn’t want to endanger my coworkers and the customers.
The general manager also saw me, asked why the f*** I was there and risking getting everyone sick, and told me to go home.
My supervisor didn’t speak to me again for months, so that was another win!
