Sales, Marketing, And Turning Off Your Ears

, , , | Working | October 7, 2021

I work for a niche engineering company that has a very specialized background inside said niche engineering field. There are no more than ten people in the world who can adequately speak on the subject and two of them work for us. The Sales And Marketing Director is very good at selling to clients but lacks both ability and know-how to create actual marketing material. While what we do is complex, the majority of her issues arise from the sheer fact that she simply refuses to listen to anything she is not familiar with, which, unfortunately, is everything. Our main product is software to perform these complex calculations.

We are currently working on the newest version of our software and she has been hyper-focused on demos so she can “market” them. We have been telling her for about a week that we are still working on integration and it will take another week to complete. This conversation happens at our stand-up meeting.

Coworker #1: “I need to figure out what [Supervisor] did and debug it so I can get [Faucet #1] to work.”

Me: “I just fixed it, so if you update the source code, it should work.”

Coworker #1: “Perfect! I will try it now and show you in a minute if that is okay?”

Boss: “Sure!”

Two minutes elapse.

Coworker #1: “Okay. [My Name] is wonderful and it works! Let me show you!” *Shares their screen*

Director: “So, you need [Supervisor] to fix this?”

Coworker #1: “No. [My Name] just fixed it.”

Director: “So, you don’t need [Supervisor]?”

Coworker #1: *Cheerfully* “Nope! Everything works!”

Director: “Do you have enough to do while waiting for [Supervisor]?”

Coworker #1: “I don’t need to wait for [Supervisor]. Everything is fixed.”

Director: “Perfect!”

About five minutes after the call, [Supervisor] sends a text to [Coworker #1].

Supervisor: “[Director] says you need me to debug something to continue working on the demos.”

She is definitely a piece of work!
