Sale Fail, Part 14

, , , , | Right | December 26, 2025

The clothing retailer I work for had done a large markdown for Boxing Day. We always do. This year it seemed a little lighter than previous years, but still great. We also had some promotions going on with some of our regular-priced merchandise.

Everyone came in today asking what our “sale” was. When I explained that we didn’t have a blanket sale that covered the whole store, some people were upset but mostly people were okay with it once I showed them the expanded sale section and talked up the other deals.

Then SHE comes in.

Customer: “How much does this coat come to with the sale?”

Me: “Oh, I’m sorry, that item isn’t on sale, it’s regular price.”

Customer: “But it’s Boxing Day.

Me: *Confused silence.*

Customer: “Today is Boxing Day, and that means everything is supposed to be on sale today!”

Me: “Oh, I’m sorry. We don’t have a sale covering our whole store. We have our expanded sale section where we’ve done some great markdowns and some great promo—”

Customer: “—No, you don’t understand. Boxing Day is about sales. Everything is supposed to be on sale! Why isn’t this on sale?”

Me: “Well, we just got that item in last week. It’s part of the new upcoming spring collection. It’s new, hence why it’s not on sale.”

Customer: “But it’s Boxing Day! It has to be on sale!”

The way she made it sound, it’s like she’s convinced there is a law requiring everything in every store to be on sale because of Boxing Day.

I faked another customer needing my attention and walked away. She’s clearly not grasping the concept that just because it’s a day for good deals, not everything is going to be included.

Icing on the cake… she walked up to my assistant manager, asking to speak to the manager about an employee who was rude to her. The look on this lady’s face when my assistant brought her up to me was priceless. She just left.
