Refusing To Engage
(I am sitting on the end of my boyfriend’s bed taking my shoes off after working a 10 hour shift at the casino. We had chatted a few days previously about how if I ever got engaged my mum said I could have her engagement ring since she hasn’t worn it since my parents’ divorce.)
Boyfriend: “I went to see your mother today.”
Me: *not really listening* “Uh huh.”
Boyfriend: *with a pointed look in my direction* “I got something from her.”
Me: *catching up* “You didn’t get ‘that.’ I know you.”
Boyfriend: “I did. I really did. Honest.”
Me: “Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say, dear.”
Boyfriend: *getting slightly offended* “I did. I have your mum’s engagement ring.”
Me: “No, you don’t. Stop trying to wind me up!”
Boyfriend: “Fine!” *pulls ring out of pocket* “Will you marry me?”
Me: *shocked* “Haha! Yes!”
Boyfriend: *now very very smug* “I told you I had it!”
(He now insists on telling people I tricked him into proposing to and marrying me!)
